1863 January 9 New Bern, N.C.

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F., 25th Massachusetts]

Friday
Jan 9
Have been at work most of the day on the
report of ordnance which is a vexatious
thing.  Th regiment had a battalion drill, skirmishing
but I did not go out.  We got news of the capture of
Vicksburg, and also good news from Tennessee, for
which may we give God the glory.  The weather is
quite cool and rainy part of the day.  The captain
is very pleasant to me.  New troops are com-
ing in in large numbers.
