1863 January 16 Camp across the Rappahannock from Fredericksburg

[from the diary of the Rev. Franics E. Butler, chaplain of the 25th New Jersey]



Fri. 16.  Vis. hos.   high wind & much colder –
Col [Enoch J.] Ayres came this P.M.  John is left on

road a few miles back – We have orders to be
ready to march early tomorrow.  Tis said to cross

river above city & attack enemy’s left wing
our rations are cookg.  very cold tonight   8 PM
& John not here yet
