1863 January 17 New Bern, N.C.

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F., 25th Massachusetts]

Saturday
Jan 17
Pretty cold last night and it is also
cold today but pleasant.  I am feeling
very well today.  Went out to company drill and
had a good drill.  Read part of Gov. Andrews'
message.   Yesterday I weighed a hundred and
fifty four pounds.  Made out a descriptive list
for Hagar this forenoon.   Got news this evening
that Burnside had taken forty five thousand
prisoners and seventeen batteries, but I cant believe
it, though I hope he may have done something good.
