1862 April 4 Chapel Hill, N.C.

[from the diary of Eliza Oswald Hill, refugee from Wilmington, N.C.]

Friday--After going to morning services Liz & I called in to
see Mrs. William Davis--& then returned old Mrs. Phillip's
and Mrs. Swain's visit--Anne Swain that we have heard
such strange accounts of--& who was at one time said to [be]
deranged came down into the parlour & entertained us so
agreeably & pleasantly that we came away very much pleased
with our visit--& surprized at her intelligence & la-
dy like manners--They have beautiful flowers--&
she sent Eliza a handsome bouquet.
