[from the diary/memoir of Capt. John B. Hager of the 14th Regulars]
April 4 This morning, Friday, at 8 1/2 oclock we struck
our tents & marched to Great Bethel and
encamped--This was the scene of Gen Schenck's
great mishap. during a halt we made today
in our march Gen. McClellan and staff rode
by. As he passed we rose & gave him a salute รก
la Militaire & received a very polite salutation
in return. We had already begun to love him.
Let the feeling be what it may among non-com-
batants in the North, those who have served
under him love him & they can't help it.
