1862 April 3 Chapel Hill, N.C.

[from the diary of Eliza Oswald Hill, refugee from Wilmington, N.C.

Thursday--Mrs. Campbell has arrived & is sick a bed--I called
to see her and heard all the Wilmington news--All of my
acquaintances have left there. Dr. Drane and Dr. Thomas'
family accompanied Mrs. Campbell up on their way
to Lexington. tom called on Dr. Mallett today for advice
& he tells him to get an extension of furlough that he
is not in a state to return to camp--If he does not take
iron and stimulants of some kind he wont get thro' the sum-
-mer--We have sent on the Doctor's certificate for a further
furlough--I hope it may be granted--As he is labouring under
a bad cold & cough.
