1862 April 19 Camp on Beckley's farm near Camp Hayes, Raleigh, Va.

[from the diary of Charles Hay, Co. H, 23rd Ohio]

Camp on Beckley’s Farm, Apr. 19th.
In consequence of inclement weather, our
march has been indefinitely postponed.
We are encamped on the grounds of one
Gen. Beckly, a Northern man by birth &
education, but of Southern sympathies,
the latter of which was the means of
his being sent to Wheeling recently, under
guard.  We have a level camp, but if
rain continues at present rate, there’ll be no limit to mud.
