[from the diary of Mary S. Boyden, daughter of the Rev. Ebenezer Boyden, rector of Walker's Church, Cismont]
Saturday 3rd Susan our new servant came today
She is very young, but we hope to be able to
manage her - Celestine returns with a tale on
Mrs Hart which I earnestly wish to disbelieve-
Celia is he[r] authority - She says Mrs Hart takes
every opportunity of ridiculing us, Fanny in par=
=ticular - that she has herself heard her &c &c -
but I think there must be some mistake about
it - Took a long & delightful ride with father
today - came back by Cobham - Much good
news - By the papers we hear of a great battle
at the West in which we are victorious - also
a letter from Hanson saying that his winter
quarters are established near Bowling Green
Caroline, & asking father & Ma to go down to
see him. So it is decided that they will go on
Monday - J.L. so much better that he can sit
up now. Thank God!
