[from the diary of Matthella Page Harrison as transcribed at a later date]
Saturday, January 3rd - Another bright day. Uneventful. Read French with Maria
in the morning. A reported victory at Port Royal. The Yankees have granted us gracious permission to trade with their soldiers so I hope to have groceries soon. I suppose their stock of flour is low, not their philanthropy warmer.
