1861 October 6

[from the diary of Wesley Hammond of the Dixie Greys, Co. E of the 42nd Virginia]

Receive news that the Yankees [ word lined through]
left last night – were ordered to strike
tents – Called out to pursue them –
Go as far as their camp – Find a
good deal of propperty. Return
to camp such as wagons, horses,
cooking utensils – etc. Then return
camp. All seem to be very
well contented without a fight
read 3 chapters in bible
preaching in camp at night –
Receive a letter from E. A. H.
rather unwell this evening.
