1861 October 24

[from the diary of Wesley Hammond of the Dixie Greys, Co. E of the 42nd Virginia]

Last night was very cold and frosty –
Our Company detailed

57
as rear guard. March through
Frankford in morning – Encamp
at night on troop mountain
March 17 miles – crossing
mountains – had a great
deal of trouble with the sick
about 9 O’clock before we got to
camp.
