1861 October 14

[from the diary of Francis G. Hale of the 34th Ohio Zouaves]

we had to put a guard
a round camp to
day by order of
Colonel Guthery he
has a spite at our
regiment and
will not let us
go out like his men
we heard news to
day that our men
had fell back two
miles at the red house
but I do not know
whether it is trew
or not gut we
will hear when
they come back
we had drill this
after noon and then
went down to the
river and shot our
guns of I shot one
of and it was the
first I have shot
of since I have been
here it kick me
I do not know
how soone w
may leave here.
