1861 October 12

[from the diary of Francis G. Hale of the 34th Ohio Zouaves]

this morning we was
up at 4 oclock got
our breakfast puled
up stake for a march
we went down to the river
got on the boat started
down to Charlst encamp
only two companeys of us
the rest went after the
secech they got where th[e]y
secech was and they
left for tall timber
they buried one soldier
to day here they was
Just taken him out
as we cam a long
to go to our quarters
or camp, they took him
out in a spring wageon,
and the soldiers follow
after him on foot
I do not know
where they took him
to, we are encamped
in a very nice plas
now got lots of
straw to sleep on
in the bargain we
have no guards out
to night for our
captain said if
we would not have
any guards if we
would be good boys
but if we did not
we would have
to have a guard
over us

they are holding court
here now and have
martial law we
have to be in at
nine oclock or
we will go to Jail
there was a man
here shot one of
the soldiers, the
boys Just took him out
of the house and hung
him the peopple did
not want to give him
up, but the soldiers
would have burnt
the town down if
they had not gave
him up he had a fuss
and went up stairs
got his pistol stuck
his head out and shot
him
