1861 October 6

[From the diary of Francis G. Hale of the 34th Ohio Zouaves]

Last night I was up
to the spring it is
a bout a hindered yards
up a mountain side
as I cameback I took
a view of camp by
starlight it was the
pretiest sight I have
saw for a good while
since I was up between
two mountains & saw
a pretty woman
news came this evening
that the man we [missing word]
at chapmanville
he was wounded
he is dead he was
wounded in the groin
he shot one or two men
after he fell
there is a bout 40
in the hospittal with
the measles Hosier
is getting better he
came down to camp
he will go home I
expect soone
there was a fellow
shot his middle finger
off of his left hand this
is three that has shot
their left hand in the
last weeke
it rained all most
all day to day but
not very hard
we are all tolerable
well at camp to
day only bad colds
and sore feete is all
the complaints I
believe
there was 500 of the
36 arrived here this
after noon they are
going to gauly or
sewell mountains
the boys go out every
sunday to see the
girls They have big
times some of them
there is one girl that
the boys are quarling
after they call her
Jane she is as ugly
as sin pretty nigh
I would not care to
talk with her let alone
quarl after her
