1861 October 11

[from the diary of Francis G. Hale of the 34th Ohio Zouaves]

I was on guard last night
acted corporal of the guard
till twelve o clock I was
guarding a lot of horses
to keepe them in the
field they had broke the
fence down I had
twelve men t[h]ree Relives
I went on at dark and
came of at day light
went to camp and got
my breakfast and starter
to go up permsimons creek
to get a duck cooked for
my sick boy I got here
for I have to wate for
it and took a smoke
with my gall while
one of the other girls went
to kill the duck there
was a nother fellow
with me so I did not
have mutch fun but
I got my dinner and
got wet for it
commened to rain
and raind till 8 o cock
and a bout that time
the long roll was
beate and we had to
fall in for battle with
our gun [nd]a equipments
and blankets the news
came that there was
a boat fired in to
and the secesh was
coming up the river
the boat was 28
miles below Charleston
there was six companeys
of our boys went down
and we went to
bed again with
orders to be rea[d]y to march
at any time
