[from the diary of Jonathan B. Hager of the 14th U.S. regulars as recopied and annoatated by him at a later date]
Aust 9 I left this morning perfectly happy at the pros-
pect of enjoying civilised life once more--
I arrived safe but not quite sound at New London
where my family was on Tuesday August 12 and
was satisfied that if I had not left my health
would have been impaired to such a degree, that
I would not have again been fit for duty in the
field if any where---
Aug 12 Got orders to report to Maj. Sprague at
Albany, N.Y. for Mustering duty.
Remained on Mustering duty until Feby 10
1863 when I recd orders to join my regiment
[Hager's narrative will resume on February 10, 1863]
