1862 August 23 Fortress Monroe, Va.

[from the diary of Samuel Johnson of the 1st Massachusetts Independent Light Battery]



On the 23rd the batteries were shipped on the
old Chelsea Ferry boat, Winnissimmet.
Cloudy and rainy all day and night.  On the
24th the Horses were shipped on the
schooners Annie Magie and Filander,
Hauled out in the stream and anchored
for the night.
