1862 August 23 Fortress Monroe, Va.

[from the diary of Samuel Johnson of the 1st Massachusetts Independent Light Battery]

On the 23^rd the batteries were shipped on the

old Chelsea Ferry boat, Winnissimmet.

Cloudy and rainy all day and night.  On the

24^th the Horses were shipped on the

schooners Annie Magie and Filander,

Hauled out in the stream and anchored

for the night.
