[from the diary of Anne Madison Willis Ambler]
Saturday. August 30, 1862
This morning we heard cannon &
went on the porch on top of the house
but could not tell whence it came--
Saw Mr. Lackland's carriage coming &
when we came down found that
he had sent for us. I was anxious to go to
see her but not at this time as we were
expecting to see the Yankees run & I
have a secret hope that you may come,
have seated myself so that I might see
you, were you to come, a hundred times
this week.
Had a delightful ride to Mr. Ld's. took Tom
& Jack, left Daisy behind, & Emma
went to gratify me for I am sur3e she did
not want to go at this time- P[atty] & the
the[sic] children were delighted to see us--
they took quiet possession of Tom carried
him in to P's room to sleep with Sammie.
Emily (servant) will dress him in
the morning, so I am quite a
lady again. only a baby to dress& undress &
that I did when I had two nurses--
