1861 October 10

[from the diary of Francis G. Hale of the 34th Ohio Zouaves]

I went to the shoe
makers shop to day
for to get my shoe
fixt it cost me one
dime I went out
while he was fixing
it and cut down
a chestnut tree for
to get some chesnuts
Bill Hosier was with me
but we did not
get many for they was not
ripe and there were
not many on the tree
we expect to go in
a fiew days to have
a nother scirmish
over to Logan court
house I expect to
go the next trip
if they go soone
the word is we will
go in a day or two
but we will not go
till we get some shoes
and blankets for the
boys lost pretty near
all they had on the first
trip and we have not got
a supply.
