1862 November 12 New Bern, N.C.

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F, 25th Massachusetts]

Wednesday
Nov 12
Slept the latter part of the night in Company
Ds quarters but I did not sleep much on account
of the cold.  the rebels during the night attacked the
twenty seventh and also the seventeenth pickets, but I
have not learned the extent of damage done. This forenoon
we started out again.  The twenty fourth skirmished awhile
and then our company took it, but we saw nothing till
we came to our old camp where we stopped and
have now got settled again. Geo. Lowe was taken
sick yesterday and is now down town so I am in the
tent here alone with God and I have been reading
the Bible and giving thanks to God for His
mercy in our safe deliverance under circum
stances of such danger.
