1862 August 16 Raccoon Ford

[from the diary of Lt. John Tyler of Letcher's Artillery as recorded at a somewhat later date]

(Aug 16th) Started
at dawn, crossed the railroad & pursued
our way up the right side of it.  That day
dined at Dr.          [blank left by Tyler] two miles from the Rapidan
river.  In the evening found ourselves on
Wm Crenshaws farm near Raccoon ford on
the Rapidan, having marched 14 or 15 miles.
After giving directions about camping

having fires put out at dark etc went up on a high
hill, from which we saw just opposite us
on the other side of the river the whole of the
Yankee army, their tents all pitched & fires
lit in the most unsuspecting manner
totally unaware of our proximity.  Took
supper this evening with Letcher Artillery,
as did the Genl & staff.
