1862 August 10 near Cedar Mountain

[from the diary of Lt. John Tyler of Letcher's Artillery as recorded at a later date]

Aug. 10th Sunday) on going forward some
four or five miles found we had had quite a

severe fight in which our Brigade had
been engaged, behaving most gallantly.
Willie Norwood being wounded in thigh was
sent to Richmond  wrote letter to Jennie &
sent by him.  In this fight (Cedar Run)
the Divisions of Winder & Ewell & our Brigade
of Hills were engaged.  Winders (Jacksons old
Division) being on the left  Ewell in the centre
& Hill on the right.  The main attack of
the evening was made on our left where
after desperate fighting (Genl Winder being
killed in the early part of the action) the
enemy flanked us and our left fell back.
(at this time Col. Cunningham was killed)
but being reinforced by a portion of Ewells
command again pushed on & drove the
Yankees from the field.  While this was going
on our right centre was attacked & the right of
Genl. Ewells giving way our Brigade was
sent as a support, getting there just in
time to receive a Cavalry charge in

which some forty or fifty saddles were em-
-ptied the first fire.  We pressed on across
a field and succeeded in driving the
Yankees for a mile when darkness prevented
further pursuit.  The left in the meantime
had pressed on, so ending in a complete
victory.  We took some 8 or 10 wagons loaded
with ordinance stores.  My old Co. F _ lost very
heavily the Capt and six or seven of my former compan-
-ions in the N.W. being killed.  That evening joined
Major Taylor & Ginter & Lt Tanner took supper & slept with
them.
