1862 August 18 Fredericksburg, Va.

[from the diary of Dr. Brodie Strachan Herndon]

18th  the Prospect ahead is very
gloomy.  The North appears to be
more & more intent on our destruction
Their capacity to harm us is
immense.  God only knows how
it is to end.  In Him is our trust
we "will not fear what man can do"
Luc & I took a long ride to
Quisenbury[?].  We fear that we
shall have to give up the Pony
The country is so stript of
provender that we will not be
able to keep two horses--besides
I doubt if we will be allowed to
retain any.  Bro John comes
down every evening as usual.
Dear Nannie's was more a translation
than a death.  She has left
such a sweet memory!  God
grant us all to meet in Heaven.
