1862 September 5 Staunton, Va.

[from the diary of Joseph Addison Waddell, civilian employee of the Quartermaster Dept.]

Friday, Sept. 5, 1862
The cars bring no news this evening — not even
a rumor. The report of McClelland's death is
still current. A dispatch from Winchester,
received this morning, confirms the report of the
evacuation of that place by the enemy. One
square of houses was burnt. A large number of
our wounded soldiers came up on the train this
evening. On their way to the Hospital they
formed a miserable-looking spec procession —
very dirty and badly clad.
