[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F, 25th Massachusetts]
Tuesday
Sept 23
Went up to the surgeon's this morning: he gave
me three pills t be taken every two hours which
I took. We struck tents this forenoon and pitched them
again this afternoon. I have felt very sick and downhearted
this forenoon, but got a letter from home, which made
me feel much better, and we also received very favorable
news from Virginia, Got a book from George Lowe by the
name of Arthur V the Christian soldier, and many of
his entries in his diary, are very similar to my own experiences.
O Lord will thou lead me in Thy ways. Wrote a long letter home
this afternoon. This evening I have been sorely vexed by the
vulgarity of the boys in the tent, but O Lord give me strength
to bear with patience the race set before me.
