1862 September 16 Lynchburg, Va.

[from the diary of William M. Blackford, bank officer and former diplomat with five sons in the Confederate Army]

Tuesday 16.  Robert got off at an early
hour--No news from the army
of invasion.  Loring has repulsed
the enemy in the Vally of Kanawha
and taken large quantities of their
arms.  Dr. Green, wife & daughter
& his mother in law Mrs Slaughter
dined with  us,  One of the hottest
days of the season.
