1862 June 15 before Richmond, Va.

[from the diary of Jonathan B. Hager of the 14th U.S. Regulars as copied and annotated by  him at a later date]

June 15.  A bright & beautiful Sabbath.  The camp in a
state of considerable excitement.  The Paymaster
arrived & paid the regiment to day. An occurrence
more pleasant than profitable to many.  The
Chaplain of the 17th N.J. Vols. read the Episcopal
services & spoke a short sermon, in the Camp of
the 4th Infantry today.  No once can appreciate
the pleasure in hearing read that beautiful service
until they have been deprived of it for so long.
I know of nothing I enjoyed so greatly.
