1862 February 13 Raleigh

[from the diary of Charles Hay of the 23rd Ohio]

Raleigh, Feb. 13th. 1862.
Today is one of the prettiest days I
have seen this winter. The sky is clear, the
sun shines brightly, the air is warm and balmy
and altogether the day has more the appear=
ance of a May=day than mid=winter.
News of the taking of Roanoke Island, and
a brilliant victory gained by Burnside’s fleet,
reached here this evening, but camp rumors
and newspaper reports are so unreliable, being
numerous and contradictory that they must
be, and of late are taken at a considerable
discount; therefore I will withhold any
manifestation of joy until reports are confirmed,
and “assurance made doubly sure.”
