Sunday – June 8th 1862
Went over to Mrs Taylors after breakfast this
morning – Spent the day in the office – Capt H
& Dick going to town – Spent the morning reading
“Combe on the Constitution of Man” - & in writing
a letter to Miss Phanny Roy in acknowledgement
of the epistles from herself & Sisters, will have .
to look up a chance for running the blockade
of the yankee pickets - don’t know when it may
go through – Brother called by to see me on his way
to see Mullie – spending a couple hours – He also
called on his return & I had Phanny saddled & rode into
town with him via Church Hill – stopped at Mr
Dunlops where Brother left his horse & came round to
Mr Harvey’s & spent the night with me there –
Rec’d letters tonight from Lillie & Julia the former
at Waltenboro & the latter at Chaston
The family move to Columbia tomorrow.
– Sent Mullie some sugar & Coffee this Evening by Mr Enders
[Combe on the Constitution of Man: This book was by George Comb. “It was considered a profound classic in the mid-19th century The first edition that I find is Boston, 1833- reprinted frequently before the war.” RKK]
[Lillie and Julia: Sisters Josephine Maria (Lillie) and Julia Rowena SRFD]
[Chaston: (Charleston) Two years later the family moved from Charleston to Columbia to escape Sherman's March. Sherman's army then burned them out of their Columbia house. SRFD]
