1862 June 7 Chapel Hill, N.C.

[from the diary of Eliza Oswald Hill, refugee from Wilmington, N.C.]

Saturday the 7th  the day looks bright & cheerful--& my spirits par
take of it--As I have just had a letter or short note written in
Pencil from Tom saying he is well was not in the battle, or
at least did not partake of it--The battle of the 1st & 2d of June--
He says they were fighting on his right & left--That his Regiment
would have been engaged in it. Had they not been placed to guard
a very important place.  The enemy had been shelling his Regiment
for 3 days when he wrote--He thought another battle inevitable as
McClennan would have to fall back, or fight--General Johnston was
wounded but not seriously--The parlour is now full of young men some
5 or six in there
