1861 Nov[ember] 9 Camp Franklin near St Johns Seminary

Dear Father--I received you kind & welcome letter with Mothers enclosed yours dated Nov 2 & Mothers dated the 30th which I think was A mistake & ought Oct 30th now as for the money that I Promised you I received A Letter from Frank Crawford to day & I want you to tell him that I will answer it soon From you Son Joseph Leavitt be sure to write Just as soon as you receive it

Letters from Joseph Leavitt of the 5th Maine and his brother George of the 5th New York were copied into a ledger by their father John Leavitt in October 1865 "because they are of value to me and I was fearful that they might get mislaid." Both boys were mortally wounded in the war, George at Second Bull Run, August 30, 1862, and Joseph at Spotsylvania, May 18, 1864. Presumably their third brother William survived the war.
