1861 [November 9] Camp

(Saturday Morning)

My darling pet

I woke up this mor-
ning before day preparing to start on
Picket. We ought to have gone yester-
day but some how it was omited[sic]
to relieve Col Hills Regiment--we have
nothing new in Camp except that the
Brigade formerly under command of
Genl Jackson has been sent to Win-
chester by order of the President and
Genl Johnston is as mad as 40 old
women about it. Our brigade was
ordered yesterday morning to put itself
in light marching order, but that
doesnt mean leaving place this place

except only in event of an attack
& then we will only change position
a mile or two--Our Genls seem
to think we are bound to have
a fight in a few days--I dont
think so however, but if we are
to fight this month, I want it quiet
now while I am in command
I thnik I am entitled to lead the
Regiment in its next fight--but
dont you think so--Gibbons I hear

[page 2]
is improving rapidly & expectes[sic] to re
turn next week and I want to be
relieved from duty imediately[sic] or as
soon as possible after his return. For
to tell the naked honest truth he has
not got sense enough for me to serve
under him. He is a good fellow &
means as well as man can mean, but

he lacks mental activity & originality,
and there is the whole case--Col
Hill told me yesterday he would aid
me as far as he possibly could in
securing a promotion & relief from
my present position and I doubt not
Genl Elzie[sic] will do the same. Gibbons
is bound to do as I say--after having
command I dont feel like falling
back to a subordinate, but enough of
this it is for your ear only. It is so very
inconvenient to write on Picket that
you must expect only one letter in
the next three days--Take might good
care of you precious self. You know not
how dear you are to me & how unhappy
your discomfort or unhapiness[sic] makes me
Jennie must be a very good girl & remember
that if I am not present to pet & humor her that I
am here devising plans to make her happy when

[side margin of page 2]
I return & will only pet her the more on account of long
separation--write every day if you can my darling and
I will write as often as I can affectionately
E T. H Warren
