1861 Nov[embe]r 12 Front Royal

Dear Richard
Your very acceptable letter of
10 Inst by Mr Thomas is received--I must
content myself with a very brief note
in reply.

I spoke to Mr Coff about the Boots
He says the Confederacy has not time to
attend to tanning leather, properly, or
something of the Kind. send your Boots
up and I will have them mended.

You enquired after Walter and his Compa
ny. After the rout at Romney; the most
of the Company came home. Walter
however did not. He remained at
Lockhauts--12 miles from Winchr: and is still
there, I believe.

Your Aunt Kathy has been on a
visit to us, and has just left. she
sends you a great many messages of
love.

The $30 sent by Mr Thomas was recie
ved. You can not tell how much plea

[page 2]
sure it gives me to find you have
not wasted your pay in the foolish
dissipations of the camp. I will take
care of it for you and hope it
may form the nucleus about which a
fortune may gather. If you can re-
sist the temptations and trial of camp
life and can come out of the war un
contaminated by its corrupting influences
you will have achieved a greater
victory than Beauregard did at Bull
run--greater than he ever will, unless
he achieves the same Kind of victory--

the great moral victory of self control.
Your Ma has made you a Cap and
Vest: and is nearly done a Linsey
Shirt for you. They will probably reach
you in the morning--I went into the
the Manor to buy the Linsey for you.
Old Mrs Murphy (of whom I bought it)
seemed very proud to think her manu-
facture was to be devoted to such
a purpose--Be sure you dont
dishonor it at least.

Tell Mr D Spangler I was at
his fathers--All are well there
and send messages of love to you & him

[page 3]
With this you find a few apples.
Please divide them with him
and tell him they are from his
Pa's--there are also two letters.

Your Ma and the children unite
with me in love to you and the
members of you mess and company

Very great haste
Truly Your Aff Parent
M.B. Buck

PS Your Ma concluded to Keep
the Shirt til day after tomorrow--
The Cap is also Kept, that the visor
may be varnished--Your Tooth brush
shall also be thought of, tho' they
are very scarce & high.

Why do you not send back boxes
bags bundling Clothes, &c

don't you want some more vege
tables &c! How did you like the
Prince Alberts!

I enclose a line for Amos

Very affectionately
M.B.B.

The recipient, Richard Bayly Buck, was in the Warren Rifles, Co. B of the 17th Virginia. See his letter of November 10 complaining about the poor quality of the boots
