1861 November 8

[from the diary of Francis G. Hale, Co. F, 34th Ohio Zouaves]

Dan Strattan and I went
ut after chest nuts to
day but did not find any
but we got some apples
we went to a house and
asked for them they told
us they had none we
told the old woman
that we some on
the treese she sayed
we might have what
we could get on the treese
we got two hankercheifs
full and started for camp
I sold five checks worth
of them to the other boys
I saw a Rabbit and a squirrel
but did not get any
one of them I did not
dare to shoot there
