1861 November 8

[from the diary of Wesley Hammond of the Dixie Greys, Co. E of the 42nd Virginia]

Heard that Gen. Floyd was
in Charleston. Had a
fight at cotton Hill. Killed
600 and took 600 prisoners
lost 300 men. Received the
news that Seward had resigned
and Penn. has gone against
Lincoln’s Administration by
a large vote.
