[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F., 25th Massachusetts]

I wrote a letter home and read some and
this afternoon have been doing the same. this
evening I played a game of chess with Bill
Partridge and got beaten. Had baked beef for
breakfast and soup for dinner. Made out orderly
Farwells descriptive list. How little I am doing
for god now and when I think of it, I feel like
casting myself in the dust as unworthy of His
mercy, but I know that His mercy is infinite
and in Jesus blood I hope for pardon. O, Lord
strengthen me to do thy will better and increase
my faith.
