1862 July 1 Staunton, Va.

[from the diary of Joseph Addison Waddell, civilian employee of the Quartermaster Dept.]

Tuesday evening, July 1, 1862.
The great battle below Richmond, still going
on. Many reports, — some very exaggerated — We
have been generally successful, and the enemy
are retreating — this is about the state of the
case so far. There has been no general rout.
Cannonading heard again to-day. Several per-
sons wounded in Friday's fight were brought
up in the R.R. train this evening.
