1862 May 25

[from the diary of Lt. John Tyler of Letcher's Artillery]

 May 25th  we were only
1 ½ miles from camp.  We built fires on
the road side and waited until 6 o’c or 2
hours – Took up our line of march then
and kept it up till 9 o’c P. M.  On the
march, a horse from one of the Cavalry
ran away, knocking down one of our
men, injuring him so severely that we
had to leave him at a house on the way,
he died next day.  Two of our noncommiss-

-ioned officers, one corp-l & one serg-t de-
-serted this morning on acc. of being pun-
-ished for a fault.  Halted for the night
at a field on the roadside near a Mill-
-pond, having marched that day about
13 miles.  The troops all bivouacked  no
tents being pitched.  Having been in the sad-
-dle for a day & a night, was very tired and
slept very soundly.
