1862 May 10 Richmond, Va.


[from the diary of Daniel D. Logan, younger brother of General Thomas M. Logan, formerly a Sgt, Co. B, 1st Special Battalion (Rightor's), now with the Hampton Legion]



                        Saturday – May 10th 1862


                        Saturday – May 10 1862
   Spent this day making purchases,
& seeing my friends – Reported to
Capt Harrison this morning - at his
head at the American Hotel – Had
to pay 18 $ for a pr boots & 25 $ for a
Coat!  Saw Aby this morning,   he came
from Gloster with the Army through
Hanover Courthouse – Richmond is
alive with officers & soldiers – Heard
today that our Cavalry had a chg yes’day
with the enemy at New Kent driving
their Cavalry back & Killing some &
taking 15 prisoners – The enemy took
our men by surprise hence our loss was
equal to theirs in Killed & wounded
Cannot get at our letters here – Telegraphed
to Father of our safety today – Cannot find
my Valise on Genl Magruders wagons – Spent
the evening with Mr H’s family – Johns sister is
here
