1862 May 10 between Yorktown and Richmond
[from the diary of Jonathan Hager of the 14th U.S. Regulars, as copied at a later date]
May 10 After a good nights sleep we awoke at
early dawn, shook the dust from our clothes,
made our toilets by the aid of a canteen of
water and a pocket comb, breakfasted
sumptuously on some coffee made by one of
my men, a hard cracker a piece of pork.
We left our bivouac at a reasonable time this
morning & marched ten miles to our Camping
ground. the march this day was without any
thing of peculiar interest except that we halted & went into camp at an early hour,
& that our baggage came up & we were comfor-
table once more. We did not pitch our tents.
The evening was dry & pleasant & we spread
our bedding in the grass.
