1862 January 19

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F, 25th Massachusetts, currently detailed to the Commissary Dept. and assigned to the Steamer "Admiral"]

Slept on stools part of the night
on the floor with my blanket over me
Quartermaster Brown was here this forenoon
and told me it was all right for me
to stay here. So I am easy about that now
I felt very bad this morning. My head felt
bad and my eyes. But I feel much better
than I did. Col Upton and Brown came
aboard again this afternoon. May God hear
our prayers and grant them most mercifully
as well as those of our friends who are
far away. We still lie here as usual. I
have been occupied chiefly in reading the
Bible, finishing Genesis and reading part of
Exodus.
