1862 January 16 [off Hatteras]

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F, 25th Massachusetts]

We still lie here at anchor
Last night I sat up till past
eleven. When Val (the head waiter[)] gave
me a place to sleep, down in the bridal
rooms on a mattress laid up on some
barrels. Staid round as usual all day today
Nothing new as I see, I cant imagine
why we are waiting so long and lying here.
This is a desolate looking place and it
is dull being here but it will come out
all right
