1862 January 16

Dear brother
I hope you had been
well since I last saw you. Pa is
coming to morrow. I hope you received
Ma's letter and Fent's. I hope you
did not forget to tell Pa about
the gun. if you did I suspect he
will carry it down with him.
Please buy me that book
that you said you were
going to buy me. Robinson
Crusoe. We are all well here
and at Dewberry. Mag can
walk right well and
Fent is allways talking about
you. Ma had a very bad headach
-e yesterday. but this morning
she is better. Ma sold the Quarter
-master eight barrels of corn and
three stacks of fodder.
yours truly

on the back of the page is written in another hand

Oh "Jackson's up" Camp Falk
O not a heart in all our host
But feels a noble thrill
To see the bristling bayonets
Of Jackson on the hill
To know that he has scaled the sides
