1862 July 4 Camp near New Bern, N.C.

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F, 25th Massachusetts]

Friday}  Went up to the surgeon, but he
July 4}  did not give me anything only
marked me for quarters.  We had roast beef
and plum pudding and lemonade for dinner
The bells of Newbern were rung and salutes
fired.  In the evening they had a big bonfire
and the band played.
