1862 May 10 West Point, Va.

[letter of Hiram Cash of the 5th Maine, begun on May 8th, continues]

We now are about 3 miles from West
Point all in good spirits we lost in the whole in the fight
last Wednesday 130 as far as it is known the most out of the 31sst
N. Y. our Regt. lost one killed and five wounded. We do not
hear how the war is going on you know more than we do
about it.  It is quite warm here we are in a clover field, the trass
is just heading out I tell you it looks nice it is the pretiest
place we have seen in Va. yet I cannot write any paticular news
or I do not hear any to write but I will try to write something
every week but some of them will be a long time coming
to you I hope you will not be uneasy about me if you do not get
them direct I want you to write all the news you can think of to write
any thing will be new to me.  I want you to write so I shall
know if you get all my letters and I will do the same.  H. M. Cash
