1861 October 7

[from the diary of Francis G. Hale of the 34th Ohio Zouaves]

It is still rain ing this
morning but not very
hard I went up to
the hospital this morng
to take a fellow soldier
some thing to eat and
some clean cloth he
is very sick he had
the measles and the
flux he has not eat
any thing for a good
while I took him some
Chicken soop we
have to pay 28[?]ct
for a cooked chicken a
young one for an old
one a quarter on foot
it is rain ing pretty
hard this af ter noon
the boys all wish
ing they was at home
while I was up to
the hospittal I went
up one of the valleys
to get a chicke for
the boy that is sick
I took a chat with one
of the wimen for
a half of an hour
I had a first rate
time the best times I
had since I went
a soldering with the
wimen I tell you
it makes a fellow feele
good to talk with
a woman now and then
it is raining this
evening like every thing
our tent leaks very
mutch we will have
a damp night of it
to night for I think
it will rain all night.
