To-day there is a great
excitement in Winchester
caused by federal
troops crossing the
Potomac opposite Martinsburg
there was a little fight
near Martinsburg. The exact
number killed & wounded
on either side is not certain
[Battle of Falling Waters on 2 July 1861.

more than a skirmish, but it was Stonewall
Jackson's very first battle, so gets attention
