1861 Dec[embe]r 6 Lower Bremo

[to Captain Cary C. Cocke]

I went to Fluvanna Court on Monday last to see Farrar about paying
Smiths acct. and found him, I think, not a little ashamed of himself for
having fallen so far short of his promise. He then promised me that he would
certainly pay the account as he was now in funds before the 20th instant as he
was going to Richmond int he interim.

We have hared nothing from Courtney for several posts since we learned that
[?] was taken with Scarlet fever in Richmond--I am not a little uneasy
about the child----Doubtless Philip has been kept informed upon the subject--
How does your young horse stand the hardships of the Camp. and what
progress are you making in preparing you winter quarters--
The servants about the Houses enquire regularly after you--Tell Nelson his
children are all well--I have lately sent one of his little Girls up to Mrs. McGuffey
at the University--who I have no doubt will do a better part by her than we could
at Low Bremo.

Farewell--your affectionate Father John H Cocke
