1861 December 12

[from the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, of Co. F., 25th Massachusetts]

It was a pretty cold night, and also this morning was cold. Had a squad
drill before breakfast. Had cold baked
beef and hard bread with coffee for
breakfast. Had brigade drill till till[sic]
about noon, commencing a little after nine
Pea soup and soft bread for dinner
Company drill from half past two till four
then dress parade at half past four
This evening I changed the book I got of
Mr. James, for another called the "Golden
Fountain", which I read awhile. It is a
series of lectures to the young on the Bible
I then went down in the orderly's tent
and heard them fiddle awhile. It is a
cold and comfortless evening inside our
tent, but I feel that the Lord is with
me though I am a poor and wicked
sinner, and may He keep me from
evil, and may I love Him more and
serve Him better.
