1861 December 13

[From the diary of Jesse Calvin Spaulding, Co. F, 25th Massachusetts]

Got up this morning at roll call
feeling lame and cold and
rather disconsolate, but after getting dressed
and stirring round and getting breakfast
(consisting of fried liver which was excellent
and soft bread and coffee) I felt much
better. Had a brigade drill lasting till
a little afternoon. Dinner of Pea Soup
This afternoon went out target shooting
I fired two shots both over. This evening
we had a social little prayer meeting
in our tent. Adams, Lowe, Phelps, Simonds,
Spaulding, Sylvester and Winn were present
and each chose and read a passage of
Scripture, after which Simonds, Sylvester,
Lowe and myself prayed. We also sung
several pieces, and all enjoyed it much.
